Usually the heavier weight gi have the "traditional" pull ties instead of the lightweight drawstring.

My pro force gi has the ties on the side. First I've had like it. Previous ones were "drawstring" tie up front.

Both Century and Juka have sizing charts on their sites under the descriptions:

I'd like to get my wife one of these gis as a christmas present.  Is there anywhere I can find a good sizing chart so I can get her the best fit?

...I had some custom-made pants from BuJin for awhile...

Wax, they're a very good source of garments. I have a hakama from them. Certainly not cheap, but very high quality.

...a lot of our techniques, especially the judo-type throws, are harder to execute on somebody who's shorter and/or heavier.

A little off the uniform topic, but that's a great point.

In situations outside of class, it makes no sense to try to hip- or shoulder-throw somebody who's a good deal shorter and heavier than you. But there are alternatives. We could have a whole thread about that.  ;)

Thanks, Marci.  That does sound long.  I had some custom-made pants from BuJin for awhile and I had to have them add more than ten inches to the standard length.  I am all legs -- they are disproportionately long, like the legs of someone 6 feet tall or so.

Sometimes I like being tall, but in class it's actually often a pain.  I have to squat a lot to execute techniques properly because everyone there is so much smaller than I am (we have mostly women and children students) and a lot of our techniques, especially the judo-type throws, are harder to execute on somebody who's shorter and/or heavier.

On the other hand the height is intimidating to others, which is a good thing I guess.  For awhile we had another woman student who is 6' 2", and she used to scare the hell out of me.  She would stand all the way across the dojo, seemingly, and throw a kick that spanned the whole room and nailed me.   ;)

Wax,
well I am only 5"4, but I think it would be plenty long.  when I hold the pre-hemmed pants up, the hem touches the floor, and the waist is at my nose... plenty of length there :o I will try to send a picture when it is finished.
 I wish I was tall.

We had many discussions on the old board about the annoying way every piece of martial arts clothing and equipment is made with men in mind.   :'(

I have an extra problem because I have a female shape but I am also tall -- 5' 10" -- so gis like the Juka Diamond are too short, especially in the legs.

I am lucky in that my sensei doesn't mind so far that I usually leave off the jacket and just wear gi pants with a t-shirt and my belt over the shirt.  I think at the brown belt level, if I ever get there, he will make me wear a whole gi.  I have gotten used to the fact that my size 4 pants are much too short, and it's even an advantage in a way because I never get tangled up in them.

Marci, I still dream of looking nicer in karate gear and so I'd love to hear your experiences with cut-for-women gis.  I am willing to pay more than I pay for other clothes because I spend so much time in my gi.

Tracy,
Thanks for the link for the Juka Diamond Gi. I will spend the extra $$ to have mine modified.I am glad to know I wasn't imagining the wrong-ness of the ties ??? ???I really love the way it fits. It is longer, and tapered at the waist, and you gotta love the pink logo. The pants are elastic waisted, with a zip-velcro-drawstring tie. ;D
I will be wearing it on Sept 11 for my belt test.

Thanks
Marci

I always had to split the sides up and resew the ties where I wanted them.  That's why the only gi I buy now are Juka Diamond, because they are cut to fit women, are tapered at the sleeves and legs, and have extra hip room with the split and ties higher.

http://jukadragon.com/uniform/diamond.htm

They aren't cheap, but they last a long time. I get 2-3 years of hard wear out of one.
