Gekisai Ni means Gekisai (Number) Two, and this is Gekisai Ichi, or Gekisai (Number) One. Gekisai Ichi is the so-called unified Kata. It was created for both Naha-te school and Shuri-te school, so even if you are not a Goju-ryu stylist, you can understand it and can perform it easily. Enjoy my video clip. Thanks.

Hi Sanzinsoo

The seven stars are the seven stars of the plough constellation. GM Hwang Kee's mother was said to have dreamt about them before he was born.

Hello, Glahad and Gi.

Thanks for your inputs. Now I understood well. I suppose Chil Sung means Seven Stars in Korean. What a beautiful name!

Sanzinsoo,
You are correct sir.  The Chil Sungs were developed by Hwang Kee for Soo Bahk Do Moo Duk Kwan in Korea.

Gi,
I just noticed you already answered that question.  I've learned Chil Sung Il and E and enjoy them.  I want to relearn Sam though.  It is a long form with impressive moves so I feel it will be challenging and good for tournaments.

Hi Sanzinsoo

Sorry to butt in - The Chil Sungs forms are a set of 7 hyungs created by the founder of Tang Soo Do: Grandmaster Hwang Kee. He studied the Muye dobo tongji (ancient manual of Korean martial Arts) and intergrated the moves back into our Martial Art.

Hi Galahad

I'm glad to hear you're enjoying your forms I take it you are learning Chil Sung il ro ? I like that one too. They are my favorite hyungs, I'm trying to learn Chil Sung Oh Ro (5) but know it'll take a life time to try to perfect them all, but I'm really enoying it.

Hi, galahad25. I’m flattered. Is “Chil Sung” a Kata of a Korean martial art?

Sanzinsoo, I like your outlook on kata being a form of meditation.  I have recently started to try to learn more of the Chil Sung forms because they seem to have inherent meditation breathing.  I have several of your videos and I like your style of short stances and movements that do not over-commit your techniques.  While strength is needed, the ability to adapt is needed as well.  Bravo!

I learned this kata from Mr. Chinin, so I am not surprised that it is the same.  It is amazing though, that being so far apart, that they are the same.

Hi, Phoenix. Thanks for your kind words. I'm glad you do the Kata same way. It's interesting we do the same thing, although we are in the different hemispheres.  ;)

Nice kata, I do it the same way.  If you are looking for input, my suggestion would be to finish your moves, some seem short.

Yes, you’re right, bogirl. And in addition to it, while we practice Kata, we need to concentrate and focus on Kata, so in most cases except demonstrations, I think it is better to practice Kata without doing Kiai. In such a case, I think maybe practicing Kata is some kind of meditation.

Domo, wakarimasu.

In public, not for a demo, silence draws less unwanted attention.

We have no "Zanshin" concept. I think it is one of practices in  Japanese martial arts, not Okinawan arts, at least not ours.

Usually I do not do Kiai, but sometimes I do Kiai, especially at a performance in a some kind of demonstraion.

In fact I should have done Kiai in this video, but it was a public place, not a Dojo, so I would have felt a little bit shy if I did Kiai there.  ;D

Sanzinsoo practices Okinawan Goju-Ryu.

Sanzisoo, do you normally practice much zanshin in your kata, or were you limited due to the recording?  Also, do you usually kiai?
