I realize this is an international forum so please forgive me if me if you don't know what I am referencing. We (I am a retired law enforcement officer) started training with the PR 24 but because of the negative press in relation to the Rodeny King case (remember the video) we switched to the colapsible baton. That is what we were told by our training officer. Who really knows...

I liked the PR 24. I had prior training with the tonfa and the Homahigano (SP?) Tonfa kata was a favorite of mine. I remember parts of it now but I can't get through it.

Honestly, I still would rather carry my old wooden riot stick from the 1990's rather than a colpsible baton. Old school...

I think the police are capable of doing thier fair share of bashing and striking. I just can't visualise your average UK bobby wielding one of those effectively, putting locks on etc.

Keep in mind that police tactics really don't emphasize the bashing/striking/clubbing with the batons of any kind -- they're used most often as deterrents and only on rare, extreme occasions are they used to hit someone with (they work extremely well, however, as a lever when performing armlocks and arm-bars and other restraining-type moves).

That being said, you don't have to have a lot of weight -- they hurt like hell.  They also have a nub on the end (like a half-flattened-ball) that is a focus point for all the weight and speed of the swing, so they do work very well when used as such.

I think the main reason police departments went from the traditional tonfa-baton to the collapsible baton (or ASP) was for two reasons -- Training (or lack thereof) and size.  They didn't have enough people who properly knew how to use the tonfa-baton and didn't want to teach them, and the ASP is so much more compact and easy to carry that they just made the switch.

There doesn't seem to be a lot of weight to the baton espeacially at the end do you think that it is very effective?

Many police departments are using the Collapsible Baton. It is easier to carry, quickly expandable, and very effective as a striking weapon.

I spoke to a lot of police in my job as a night club doorman, through martial arts and personal friends who are officer's and frankly they didn't have a clue.

I think it may have been more do with practicality. The police in the UK use an extendable batton which doesn't get in the way so much as it takes up less space on their belt.
It's not what you do that counts but rather how spectacularly bad you do it...

I see. Thanks, Gi.  :(

They Police had them here in the UK too. I think they stopped using them coz they weren't trained enough and by all accounts just used them as a type of baton to bash people with. :o

Where did you learn?

I learned it from an Okinawan karate master in Osaka, Japan.

In fact, we should use a pair of Tonfa instead of one single Tonfa.

By the way, I have heard that New York police stopped using Tonfa-like baton, PR-24. Is there anyone knows why they no longer use Tonfa?

Among Okinawan ancient weapons, I think Tonfa is most practical. Today I practiced Tonfa in the park. See my video clip. Enjoy it. Thanx!  ;D
