Galahad, glad you liked it.

We do quite a bit of knife defense. Comes from the aikijujutsu (probably Daito ryu, but that's the topic for another endless thread) that Choi Yong Sul learned during the thirty-or-so years he spent in Japan, and then took back to Korea.

Our knife defenses rely on just a few principles: get off the line of the attack, control the weapon hand and incapacitate the attacker completely. We practice against a good variety of attacks. We acknowledge that going up unarmed against a knife is an awful position to be in, and that your chances of success aren't good, but it's still better to know a bit of defense than to know nothing - or to know some flashy but ineffective stuff that would surely get you killed.

Our knife defenses assume that you don't have the option of running away, which is always the best defense.  ;)

Good stuff.   Especially enjoyed the knife defense techniques.

This is a link to a video of a Jungkikwan hapkido demonstration that I had put up on the old site that we lost.

To view the video clip, go to the Jungkikwan home page by clicking the link below. Then, select English. Browse down the left sidebar until you see the "HAPKIDO" heading, then click on the "MOVIE" link below the heading (it's the second link in the second group of four links). This will open a page with six thumbnails at the top. The demo video is the rightmost one (the one with the caption ("합기도시범").

The video is probably about ten years old. The two guys doing the demo were both master instructors in our Daegu school at the time (one has since moved on).

These techniques are quite representative of our style of hapkido. You'll notice that standing, sitting and prone techniques are demonstrated.

If you're interested, the other five videos on the page are old clips that are of significant historic value. They feature the founder of hapkido, Choi Yong Sul, and the current head of the Jungkikwan, Lim Hyun Soo, and other early Jungkikwan students.

Hope you enjoy these.
