Hey thanks Everyone!

I took some time to really check out what I was looking for, and I'm afraid TSD isn't for me.

It's more linear and less fluid than what I am used to or like. I'm sure there might be other TSD schools that perhaps are more impressive or flowing regardless of the style itself. I've seen some TSD on youtube that looks pretty cool, but I'm simply more focused on particular Chinese Arts.

I plan on doing some training a few hours away with Kayo Robertson who trained with Ben Lo from Taiwan. Time to spend the extra bucks and make it happen : )

But thanks again for all the excellent help!

They're completely ridiculous from a martial point of view, but good for conditioning and agility/balance/coordination. Plus they look cool.

Yes you're probably right, I've not seen those kicks before.

Gi, I have in mind the 540 and 720 spinning kicks used in demonstration TKD. I suppose most students never get to this level, but all the TKD demos I have seen involve very high kicks, including some flipping and spinning. I know that's sort of the flashy pinnacle, but I've never seen anything like that in TSD. It has been my experience that TKD also uses very rapid series of less powerful kicks that I haven't found in TSD. Again, I guess it's all experience. Maybe the TKD people I trained with were more sport/demo oriented than what you're familiar with.

Brandon how do you mean TSD is not as acrobatic as TKD. I would say the oposite is true. I suppose it depends on your Instructor and what he concentrates on. We were taught all the spinning and jump spinning kicks, In fact most of which I've never seen in TKD.

I'm with Galahad. One good instructor is worth a large number of poor ones.

I checked out the website for the Vernal studio and I'm a little surprised.  They are not a WTSDF studio but in the TSD Alliance.  This is a group headed by KJN Darryl Khalid.  My studio is also under his tutelage.  Three classes a week for an hour and 20 min sounds about average for availability.  Only one blackbelt to instruct sounds a little thin for resources.  If he's good though....

Hmm, here's how I would sum up TSD:

If Shotokan and WingChun had a baby that was adopted and raised by Korean parents, it'd be TSD.

Very light on the feet, fast moving.

Lots of kicks, but not as acrobatic as TKD.

Many of the straight line hand techniques found in Karate, but not as powerful.

Hand grabs and throws borrowed from other arts.

Stuff from my experience that describes teaching style more than the art itself:
Instructors very willing to modify the art.

Basic techniques not emphasized enough.

Emphasis on personal developement.

Rank earned very quickly.

Hi Sizzaxe

Is it World TSD Association that you have looked at? Anyway You'll should find all the circular kicks, jump spinning kicks etc. that you may be aquainted with from some of the chinese arts within any good TSD school. It depends on what you are looking for. WTSDA isn't the most traditional form. If the most traditional form is what you are looking for you want TSD (Soo Bak Do) Moo Duk Kwan . In my experience in the UK I've found that even the highest ranking instructors and Masters who broke away to form world TSD were quite low ranking when they left and so do'nt know all the Hyungs (mainly the high Chil Sung forms),that might not matter to you as most of the other stuff is there that was laid down by the Founder GM Hwang Kee. There are also some additions such as weapons that were not taught originally. So I suppose it comes down to how much of a purest you are.

Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone actively training in TSD could tell me about the art. I am looking for a martial arts school to train at and the most reputable traditional schoool nearby seems to be the TSD school.

My experience is mainly in Chinese styles, but somewhat limited.

The website of the school I'm checking out is:

http://www.vernalmartialarts.com/

The school is affiliated with the WTSDF. The instructor also teaches Haidong Gumdo (Korean Sword), which I don't know much about, but looks very cool on the youtube videos I've watched.

Thanks!
