Especially becauase I'm a big guy, I was especially disappointed that I could not wear the nice Chinese uniforms and formal silks. A freind of mine found his calling but starting his custom uniform bussiness. You may have heard of him. Sifu Norman Smith and superiormartialarts.com.

Unfortunately the typical Chinese style uniform tend not to be tailored well to American sizes and not hold up very long to repeated washings and wear and tear of daily practice, especially sparring if they engage in that. Many schools adopt karate style uniforms or pay extra for custom made.
Ha, ha, ha, It's funny you bring that point out since that is the main reason we use karate pants in my school... They last longer and are better quality. I try the Kung fu pants a few times (usually if I haven't have a chance to do laundry, and it keeps falling or strectching.

More and more Chinese style schools are adapting a colored sash rank system and uniform to compete with the commercail karate and TKD schools. Unfortunately the typical Chinese style uniform tend not to be tailored well to American sizes and not hold up very long to repeated washings and wear and tear of daily practice, especially sparring if they engage in that. Many schools adopt karate style uniforms or pay extra for custom made. Competition wushu (IWF) had always until very recently strictly required standard competition silks. FOr Northern routines were either Solid red, black, white, or royal blue, and maybe lemon yellow and orange with matching sash. Internal arts were long sleeve and no sash and Southern fist was sleeveless and no collar, females had 3/4 sleeve with no collar. Until very recently. Now the trend has swung the other way and the coolest patterns and color options are available. Rnak in competition goes by years of experience. and not by what color sash one wears. In school it pretty much the same, Its when one joined the "family" determines rank.

I don't know too much about Chinese culture on this particular aspect, but it seems that the rank hierarchy really lends itself to Japanese/Korean ideas of strictly regimented seniority.

Unlik most Japanase/Korean martial arts, Chinese martial arts do not have a standard uniform, much less a standard ranking/belt system. Some schools uses one or two color sashes at most. It seems the reasoning is tradition. Also there are so many different styles of kung fu, each emphasizing different techniques and principles. Still, sometimes I feel it would be nice to have some sort of  standard uniform and ranking system like other martial arts styles. Particularly hepful for tournaments. For example, what one person might consider beginner, another might consider intermediate or advance. Having a some type of color belt system would help people know where they stand (skill wise) and keep things a little more fair.  Your thoughts?
