While still in the Metal phase/season I attended another internal arts workshop. Since the theme was metal, we worked on the Chinese straightsword commonly known as the "TaiChi sword" or Jian combined with Chi gong breathing and finger positioning which activated meridians in the body associated with the metal element and the corosponding organs which are the Lungs which run along the thumb and the large Instestine which runs along the index finger. Interesting practices such as breathing while circling the tassle clockwise, opening the sword scabbard and ofcourse the partner drills of blade against blade similar to sticky hands in other styles. The most fun was the chance to put it all together into a free form flowing exercise similar to kata but made up spontaneously based on your prior training if any, along with the new information learned. WHile circular walking weaving in and out of 3 poles set up in a triangle without striking them with the blade, you not only used the blade's sharp edges but the flat sides as a weapon, the tassle, pommel and scabbard as well (held in the opposite hand) at a semi fast pace.

As stated before, we are in the Metal phase of the year and the major organs that are more active at this time are the Lungs and the large intestine. The hand formations of the "Steel ring" (Resembles the "OK" sign pinching the index finger and thumb together with the remaining fingers stretched out) and the "Steel Gun" (Pointing the index finger and thumb out while clenching the 3 remaining fingers shaped like a gun or the letter "L" while meditatiing or performing martial arts such as Tai Chi will activate and stimulate the corrosponding organs. Like a sharp sword you should be decisive in your decision making in your daily lives.

Hey, I'm a Yang Water Dog - does this mean I have to chase you down the riverbanks?  ::)

Great post, Blade! And always remember - dress for the season, not for the day. (Supposedly an old Chinese saying - who knows?)

Aww, it's just a bit of Fung Shui.

If you really break it down, I'm a yang water rat.  So I figure that makes me like a river otter!  (sounds better than a muskrat)  ::)

Thanks Blade!

So what are the colors/elements of the other phases?  I'm guessing green/wood for spring, and red/fire for summer.  Does that mean black/water for winter?

Wow Bogirl I'm duly impressed! You are dead on in the sequence. I'd have thought you cheated and peeked at my notes! *LOL*

It's already cold in Philly, Waxie. Below average cold (or unseasonal like the tv forecast guy says). Let's trade. I have never beign to L.A., or California for that matter.

Thanks for the info, Blade. I feel better about testing for second part of broadsword next week... And then, double swords test next January. I am glad my current weapon training fits the season. But I will pass on the white, I look better on earth colors.

You're going to have to contact the city of Los Angeles about this Autumn thing.  It's hot as hell here and feels like July.

In the Spring phase (Shou Yang or smallest Yang) our stored energies began to emerge to reach its peak in the Summer (Tai Yang or greatest Yang) now its Autumn, (Shou Yin or smallest Yin) we are harvesting and begin to store our energies to get us through another Winter (Tai Yin or greatest Yin Phase) like squirrels gathering nuts. The element in this present phase of Shou Yin is metal, lots of sword and blade work/training during this time should be done. The color of white is prevalent.
