I saw it Sunday night. It was an enjoyable, funny, action buddy movie, but not Sherlock Holmes as I knew him. This felt more like James Bond in Edwardian England.

The deduction parts were enjoyable also.

Well we went and saw Sherlock Holmes tonight.  There was an interesting dynamic between the characters but I won’t comment on that because I don’t want to spoil it for people who haven’t seen it yet.

It is definitely not for the young..  Maybe teens but if it were me, nothing below 16.  I found the fight scenes interesting.  I can see the slap blocks that Bogirl talked about but wonder if they might be reasonably authentic.

My impression of Wing Chun is that it is a finesse art and would not require a  lot of solid blocks but a lot of redirecting to make openings.  One vertical fist I saw looked straight out of Kenpo. While some inside moves   looked a lot like demonstrations of  Mook Jong techniques that I’ve seen.

I saw the part that reminded of Escrima and I agree,  I find my self wondering if one scene toward the end was a demonstration of the stick fighting that was popular in Teddy Roosevelt’s time.

Without giving the plot away, I think I agree with Bogirl in that I won’t be adding it to my DVD collection

I saw it yesterday.  There was in one scene where Holmes was in a prize fight with a big brawler.  Compared to the guy throwing solid punches, he looked a bit like a pansy with his slap blocking and open hand strikes.  I won't ruin it though... ;)

There was also a bit of stickwork that remined me of Escrima, along with some fencing-type sword/stick handling.

Not a bad movie, but I won't be adding it to my dvd collection.

The original Holmes (when Doyle brought him back from the dead) said that he had studied "Baritsu" which was an actual martial art, a combination of jujitsu and English boxing.

Its been a long time since I read anything with Holmes in it but I'm thinking that he is supposed to be a practitioner of one of the Chinese arts.  For some reason "Chin na"  comes to mind.  I'll bet that Sifu or Bladesaint would be able to say which it was.

The movie looks okay, definetely a rental, at least.  But I thought 'the brawler' was Watson, not Sherlock. Still, if it has some Wing Chun, I will certainly watch it.

I found out that Bob Barker ( from the Price is Right) studied Karate from Chuck Norris. Did you know that?

Actually, I had heard that.  In fact I seem to remember a demonstration they did.

Wow! That's interesting!!  I thought that I saw some quick scenes of potential quality movements in the pre-views.

I'm not sure how true this is but Robert Downey Jr.  revealed on Regis Friday that he is a Wing Chun practitioner.

This movie may be even more interesting than the previews.
